Bootlegger

When I was born, I was named ‘Homebrewy McHomebrewface’, like my father before me. A respectable name, for a dignified age.

How to run it (Storyteller)

Add the Bootlegger to any script you build yourself that includes characters or rules not found in the official Blood on the Clocktower releases. It exists purely as a disclosure token — place it on the script so players know the game contains homebrew content before they sit down. It has no night order entry and no in-game mechanical effect; simply list it at the top of the script and make sure all players understand which custom characters or rules are in play before the game begins.

Playing with the Bootlegger — as good

  • Before the game starts, ask the Storyteller to clarify every homebrew character and any custom rule changes so you can reason accurately about what information is and is not possible.
  • Treat homebrew roles with extra skepticism early — their abilities may interact with official characters in ways that are not immediately obvious, so gather claims and cross-reference them carefully.
  • If a player claims a homebrew character you do not fully understand, press for a plain-English explanation of their ability before accepting their information at face value.
  • Remember that evil players may exploit player unfamiliarity with homebrew abilities to sell false claims, so take time to understand every custom role on the script.

Playing with the Bootlegger — as evil

  • Exploit any player confusion about homebrew abilities — if good players are unsure what a custom role does, an evil player can claim it and fabricate plausible-sounding information that is hard to verify.
  • Study the homebrew roles on the script thoroughly before the game so you can manufacture a consistent, detailed claim that sounds authoritative to players encountering the character for the first time.
  • If a homebrew role has a complex or conditional ability, use that complexity as cover — vague or shifting information is harder for good to pin down when the ability itself is unfamiliar.
  • Identify which homebrew characters have strong town-solving potential and prioritize misdirecting or eliminating those players early.
